COD or UPI: which payment options an Instagram seller should offer
The Slaby team5 min read
A buyer who found you on a reel an hour ago has no reason to trust you with money yet. COD removes that worry. UPI removes yours: the money is in before the parcel leaves.
Most small sellers end up offering both, with rules. This guide shows what each option really costs on a typical order, when to lean on each, and how to set the rules so you keep the buyers COD brings in without paying for every change of mind.
What each option costs you
- UPI through a gateway
- The gateway's processing fee
Payment confirmed automatically; check Razorpay's or Cashfree's current pricing
- UPI to your own UPI ID
- No fee
But you check each payment in your bank app before approving — screenshots alone can be faked
- Cash on delivery
- Your courier's COD charge
Plus two-way shipping on every refused parcel, and money that arrives days later
One ₹999 order, four outcomes
- Paid by UPI to your UPI ID
- ₹999 in your bank today
Cost: a minute to match the UTR in your bank app
- Paid through a gateway
- About ₹980 in a day or two
After a processing fee of around ₹20; your gateway's rate decides the exact figure
- COD, delivered
- About ₹964, a week or so later
After a ₹35 courier COD charge, once the courier remits the cash
- COD, refused
- Minus about ₹175
₹70 forward, ₹70 return, the ₹35 COD charge, and the piece off sale while it travels back
Illustrative fees and courier rates. Look up your own gateway pricing and courier rate card and redo the sums.
The last row is why COD needs rules. One refused parcel can wipe out the margin on several delivered ones. But the third row is why most sellers keep COD anyway: it brings in buyers who would never have paid a stranger in advance.
When to lean on UPI
- Custom and made-to-order pieces you cannot resell.
- Higher-value orders, where a refused parcel hurts.
- Pincodes where your COD parcels often come back.
- Repeat buyers who already trust you.
When COD earns its cost
- First orders from new followers.
- Low-value, easy-to-resell items.
- Buyers who do not use UPI or cards.
Move buyers from COD to UPI over time
The second order is where UPI wins. A buyer who has received one parcel from you now trusts you, and the reason they chose COD is gone. Put a small card in every COD parcel: 'Thank you! Next time, pay by UPI at checkout and we pack your order the same day.' Keep the promise — a paid order needs no confirmation call, so it really can ship sooner.
Over a few months, more of your regular buyers pay upfront, and COD becomes what it should be: a way for new buyers to try you.
How UPI to your own UPI ID works on Slaby
- 1
Turn it on and add your UPI ID
Settings → Payments
Switch on 'Accept UPI to your bank', add your UPI ID, and scan the QR preview with your own phone to check your name shows. Buyers pay this exact ID.
- 2
The buyer pays with the amount filled in
Checkout shows a QR and an 'open UPI app' button for GPay, PhonePe, Paytm or any UPI app, with the exact order total.
- 3
The buyer sends proof
The 12-digit UTR, a screenshot, or either — you choose which. The order shows as awaiting your verification.
- 4
You check your bank app and approve
Match the amount and UTR in your bank app, then approve. Only then does the order become a confirmed sale.
- 5
Unpaid orders clear themselves
If no proof arrives within the time you set (24 hours by default), the order is cancelled and held stock goes back on sale.
Never approve on a screenshot alone. Edited screenshots are easy to make. Approve only when the money shows in your bank app. If you would rather not check each payment, connect a gateway, which confirms payments automatically.
A balanced setup
- 1
Make UPI the easy default
Add your UPI ID so buyers can pay straight to your bank, and connect your own Razorpay or Cashfree account when you want cards and automatic confirmation.
- 2
Cap COD by order value
Allow COD only up to an amount you can afford to have refused, such as ₹2,000.
- 3
Choose one nudge: a COD fee or an advance
A small COD handling fee, shown as its own line, nudges buyers to UPI. Or ask for part of the total online — enough to cover return shipping — with the balance on delivery. The COD fee is not charged on part-payment orders.
- 4
Limit COD to pincodes that work
Keep COD where your deliveries succeed, and ask for prepaid elsewhere.
- 5
Accept each COD order first
New COD orders wait in a 'COD to accept' list. Call or message unusual ones before you pack; rejecting cancels the order and puts the stock back.
Common questions
- Does UPI through a gateway cost more than my personal UPI ID?
- Yes, the gateway charges a processing fee. In exchange every payment is confirmed against its order automatically, and fake screenshots stop being your problem.
- Can I offer both UPI to my UPI ID and a gateway?
- Yes. Buyers choose at checkout. Many sellers start with UPI to their own ID and add a gateway once checking payments by hand takes too long.
- Will an advance on COD put buyers off?
- Some, but the ones who pay a small advance are far more likely to accept the parcel. Start small and watch both your orders and your returns.
- How do I know which pincodes to block for COD?
- Look at where your refused parcels went. Slaby can also score COD risk from your own delivery history and steer risky orders to pay online.
- When does COD money reach me?
- After the courier delivers and remits the cash, usually days later. The COD remittance page tracks what is still with the courier and what has been paid out.
