Set up GST for your store
Turn on GST, add your GSTIN and state, choose whether your prices include tax, and set a default rate and HSN. Optional price slabs charge a different rate by the price of each piece.
What this page is for
This page holds your store's GST details. Slaby uses them to work out tax on every website order and counter bill, and to print a proper tax invoice.
Changes apply to new orders only. Orders already placed keep the tax they were placed with, so your past invoices never change.
You need the Manage tax settings permission. The Invoice design link at the top opens how your invoice looks.
Set up GST in 5 steps
- 1
Turn GST on
Tax profile → Charge GST on orders
While it is off, orders carry no tax figures and the other fields are greyed out. Not registered for GST? Leave it off.
- 2
Add your GSTIN and legal name
GSTIN, Legal name
Type your 15-character GSTIN. If it is valid, your state fills in by itself. Type the legal name exactly as on your GST certificate; it prints on tax invoices.
- 3
Check your state
Place-of-supply state
Your registered state. A buyer in the same state pays CGST + SGST; a buyer in another state pays IGST.
- 4
Set the default rate and HSN
Default GST rate (%), Default HSN code
These apply to any product that has no rate or HSN of its own. Picking a known HSN fills in its usual rate if the rate is still 0.
- 5
Say how you enter prices, then save
Price entry, Price display, Rounding → Save tax settings
Most Indian shops type prices with GST included (like an MRP): pick Prices include tax. Then tap Save tax settings.
Changing Price entry changes how every existing price is read. ₹1,180 "including tax" is ₹1,000 + ₹180 GST; "excluding tax" it becomes ₹1,180 + ₹212.40 GST.
GST price slabs (optional)
Some goods are taxed by the price of each piece. For example, clothing at one rate up to a set price and a higher rate above it. A slab rule does this for the categories you pick; the slab rate replaces the product's own rate, and its HSN stays the same.
The price checked is one piece's taxable value after discounts: the selling price without GST, after any coupon, offer or counter discount. "Up to" includes the amount itself.
- Tap Add slab rule, pick Categories (or All categories), then set each slab: Up to (one piece) and its GST rate (%). The last slab, Everything above, covers the rest.
- Use Try a price to check: type ₹999 and see which rate applies.
- Up to 20 rules and 8 slabs per rule. Tap Save slabs.
Ask your CA for the rates Slaby doesn't know the current GST rules for your goods. Enter only the slabs and rates your CA has confirmed, and update them when the rules change.
What the fields on this page mean
- Charge GST on orders
- The main switch. Off: no tax is added or shown, and the fields below are locked.e.g. A small shop below the GST limit keeps this off.
- GSTIN
- Your 15-character GST number, printed on invoices. It is checked as you type.e.g. 27ABCDE1234F1Z5 (27 = Maharashtra).
- Place-of-supply state
- Your registered state. It decides whether a sale is CGST + SGST (same state) or IGST (other state).e.g. Shop in Pune, buyer in Mumbai → CGST 9% + SGST 9%. Buyer in Delhi → IGST 18%.
- Default GST rate (%)
- The rate used when a product has no rate of its own.e.g. Most of your goods are 18% → set 18.
- Default HSN code
- The HSN code used for products without one. You can search the list or type your own code.e.g. 6109 for T-shirts.
- Price entry
- Whether the prices you type already include GST (Prices include tax) or GST is added on top (Prices exclude tax).e.g. Include: ₹1,180 = ₹1,000 + ₹180 GST. Exclude: ₹1,000 + ₹180 = ₹1,180.
- Price display
- How prices appear to shoppers on your storefront: with tax (Show tax-inclusive) or without (Show tax-exclusive).e.g. Retail buyers expect tax-inclusive; trade buyers often prefer tax-exclusive.
- Rounding
- Per line rounds the tax on each item with no round-off line. Whole-unit invoice round-off rounds the invoice total to a whole rupee.e.g. Total ₹1,234.60 → with invoice round-off, ₹1,235.
- GST price slabs
- Optional rules that pick the GST rate by one piece's price, for the categories you choose.e.g. Up to ₹2,500 → 5%; Everything above → 18%.

Common questions
- I'm not registered for GST. What do I do?
- Leave Charge GST on orders off. Orders and bills then carry no tax figures. Turn it on the day you register.
- It says my GSTIN doesn't look valid.
- A GSTIN has exactly 15 characters: 2 digits for the state, 10 for your PAN, then 3 more. Check for an O typed instead of 0, and that the state digits match your state.
- My prices already include GST. Which option do I pick?
- Price entry → Prices include tax. Then ₹1,180 is read as ₹1,000 plus ₹180 GST at 18%.
- Why did a buyer get IGST instead of CGST and SGST?
- Their delivery state is different from your Place-of-supply state. Same state gets CGST + SGST; another state gets IGST.
- Will changing the rate change my old invoices?
- No. Placed orders keep their tax. Only new orders use the new settings.
- Can different products have different GST rates?
- Yes. Set the rate on each product. The Default GST rate (%) is only for products without their own rate.
- How do I charge 5% up to a price and 18% above it?
- Add a GST price slab rule: Up to (one piece) ₹2,500 at 5%, then Everything above at 18%, for the categories it applies to. Confirm the numbers with your CA.
- It says each slab's up to amount must be higher than the one before.
- Slabs go from low to high. Make every Up to (one piece) amount bigger than the row above it, and leave the last slab as Everything above.
- Where do I get the GST report for my return?
- In Reports. It uses the tax worked out from these settings on every bill and order.
